Malcolm's Journey: A Decade of Growth

_DSC1648Meet Malcolm....................

Malcolm is a witty, engaging person who lights up a room with his friendly nature and lively conversation. His four-legged best friend, Bo, is never far from his side. He enjoys playing Xbox, listening to audiobooks, especially The Lord of the Rings, and bowling, with a recent interest in Lawn Bowls. He’s also taking on new activities like aqua aerobics, broadening his social circle and staying active. But Malcolm’s life wasn’t always so connected.
Ten years ago, Malcolm’s days looked very different. Persistent headaches and low confidence kept him home, avoiding interactions with others. He wouldn’t pick up the phone or use the stove to cook meals, relying on family for much of his day-to-day life. The thought of joining groups or trying new activities was not on his radar.

Taking the First Steps

With the encouragement of his mum, Carolyn, and his sister, Sara, Malcolm decided it was time to make some changes. He applied for support through the NDIS, setting small, practical goals: learning to cook, getting out of the house, and meeting new people. His journey started with small steps, like allowing support workers into his home, which was a real adjustment.
When Malcolm joined My Ability Pathway (MAP) in 2021, he met Scott and Catherine, support workers he immediately clicked with. Their calm and encouraging approach and genuine interest helped Malcolm feel comfortable working towards his goals step by step.

Building Skills and Confidence

With the support of Scott and Catherine, Malcolm began exploring new skills and activities. Cooking has become an area where he finds enjoyment and independence. He tries different recipes using his air fryer and stove; he has developed a flair for making pasta dishes and loves the results of his newfound expertise.
Lawn Bowls has been another turning point. While Malcolm loved Ten Pin Bowling, the costs made regular games financially challenging. The team at MAP suggested Lawn Bowls as an alternative. Malcolm joined the MAP Night Owls and soon discovered a passion for the sport.

Becoming a Leader

As his confidence has grown, so has his role in the team. Malcolm is now in his third season and is captain of the Night Owls, helping to guide (or direct) his teammates and welcoming newcomers to the game. He shows a sense of authority, delegating roles, and confidence, while enjoying the camaraderie and social connections he’s built through the sport.
Malcolm's experience through Lawn Bowls has emboldened him to explore other activities, like aqua aerobics. This new activity has allowed him to meet people outside his usual networks and be active, a benefit for his general well-being.

Looking Ahead

Malcolm's family and friends have watched these changes unfold, seeing him take more initiative and directing his life. Malcolm's growth has been steady and meaningful, from answering the phone and organising his schedule to trying new activities. Carolyn speaks as any mother does about the pride (and relief) of seeing her son happy, growing, and living well, doing new things he now loves.

A Story of Steady Progress

Malcolm’s journey is a testament to how the right support and encouragement can help anyone achieve their NDIS goals at their own pace. The support from his family, the guidance of Scott and Catherine, and his determination have all played a role in helping Malcolm to create a life that is connected, active, fun and independent.
