Supporting students and staff

Before her Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Karen dedicated her career to supporting children with complex needs, managing a school program that empowered students, teachers, and families. She oversaw teachers and support staff, led meetings, organised sessions to help parents understand their children’s learning, and often stepped in to teach classes, giving teachers essential time for planning and paperwork. Her role combined leadership, care, and direct involvement in the lives of the students and teachers she supported.

Outside of work, Karen was creative, enjoying drawing, painting, reading, and cooking. These activities brought her joy and a sense of balance in her life.

Life Changes

After her ABI, Karen experienced changes in her day-to-day life, including managing chronic pain and frequent headaches. Recently, Karen moved to Edithburgh, where she now lives closer to her family and support network. With the guidance of her Support Coordinator, Karen Healey, she has established a structured network of formal supports to help with household and personal tasks. This support has given Karen more time and energy to reconnect with painting, one of her true passions.

Reconnecting with Art

Painting has become an important part of Karen's life, providing her with a comforting outlet and relief from the physical discomforts associated with her ABI. She is creating beautiful pieces that reflect her creativity and love for art. Karen is now working towards framing her artwork, with the aim of sharing it with others to open their mind to art and sell her pieces. For Karen, each painting is more than an artistic creation, it represents her renewed connection to a cherished activity and her enthusiasm for creating something meaningful. Through her art, Karen is embracing a new chapter in her life, one brushstroke at a time.
