Going from strength to strength: Jordan's Journey
Beneath a quiet exterior, Jordan is a young man of remarkable determination. The past couple of years have seen extraordinary developments for him, as he’s navigated living independently, moving from the country to the suburbs, learning to drive and undertaking study. Jordan goes from strength to strength, paving his way to shape a life of his choosing.
Moving from country to city
Undertaking a big move is a challenge, one that Jordan rose to when he chose to move from Clare to Adelaide’s northern suburbs. While in Clare, Jordan accessed NDIS supports to develop the skills for living independently as a young man, such as managing tenancy obligations, scheduling chores and balancing work and life.
Despite the charms of the country, Jordan has always had an eye for city living. Keen to explore the opportunities offered there, Jordan took the plunge and moved. Using the skills he was supported to develop, Jordan now lives close to Adelaide city, maximising his independence as a self-supporting young man who says he enjoys the variety and opportunities offered by his new lifestyle.
Taking the wheel
After settling from the move, Jordan set his sights on achieving another goal: learning to drive. Facing unique challenges due to the impacts of his disability, Jordan turned again to the NDIS to support him. With assistance from his Support Coordinator at MAP, Jordan soon identified a Driving Occupational Therapist and started to work with them. The processes involved allowed Jordan a safe and supportive opportunity to get behind the wheel and develop the complex skills needed for becoming a competent driver.
Learning to drive is a lengthy task and Jordan is excited exploring all the stages involved in developing this life-altering skill, with both NDIS and informal support. Jordan says he is very eager to continue this journey.
Experiences and education
Jordan hasn’t stopped there! His determination and personal experiences led him to ongoing learning and study. Aiming to find paid employment as a disability support worker, Jordan has recently passed a Certificate III in Disability Support at TAFE and has said he is excited to undertake work placement in late March 2025.
The individual insights Jordan brings to supporting others cannot be taught. As a young man entering the industry, he has much to offer as a mentor and peer support to others, leading by example as well as utilising the knowledge he has gained through committing to further education.
A bright future
With a demonstrated drive to succeed and achieve, Jordan has forged incredible changes over the past few years. His remarkable progress has empowered Jordan to live more fully in his values through honouring his choice and control, continual learning and developing skills. Jordan’s journey to independence and ongoing work towards achieving his goals showcases a remarkable young man determined to make his life his own.
