Festival of Connection 2023

On Sunday, December 3rd, in celebration of the International Day of People with Disability, My Ability Pathway (MAP) hosted the Festival of Connection in the Tanunda Town Square. Over 100 attendees gathered for this music festival, designed to foster community connections and promote accessibility and inclusion.

Despite working with a small budget and a tight timeline, MAP successfully created an event that was accessible to people with disabilities. Auslan interpreters were prominently positioned with the bands, translating the music's themes and sounds. Braille price lists were provided, enabling everyone to make purchases from the various vendors. A dedicated chill zone offered a safe space for individuals with sensory needs to take a break while remaining in a visible and secure area. Additional disability parking spots and accessible toilets ensured that attendees in wheelchairs could easily participate. The day was filled with laughter, dancing, and meaningful conversations as strangers from across the state came together, embodying the spirit of inclusion.

A message to Businesses

As the event concluded, MAP representative Tari Wagland challenged business owners with some compelling questions. "With hundreds of events generating income for businesses across the state, why isn't accessibility a top priority in event planning?" Tari asked. “It only takes a few emails to arrange Braille documents to be delivered to the door; Auslan Interpreters can be booked easily with a quick call; creating a chill zone for people with sensory needs to relax takes minimal effort, it is not hard, businesses just need to do it! Be inclusive!

Importance of Inclusion

At MAP, we believe that accessibility and inclusion are essential. We are dedicated to continuing our role as change leaders by educating the community and highlighting accessibility issues. Through these efforts, we will keep building strong community connections for people with disabilities.
